Self-fulfilment is the creed of western societies, public-mindedness is only for social romantics. Has one of the key achievements of the Enlightenment – the autonomy of the subject – turned into its negative? Have we forgotten the value of collectivity? Is it even possible to create community within heterogeneous and pluralistic societies? And if so, how? Maybe in small collectives that combine an individualism beyond egotism and a sense of community beyond homogeneity?
