At a time when algorithms and digital technologies dominate our visions of the future, utopias may seem a thing of the past. But this is precisely when it is important to ask: Are we still capable of imagining a better future?

Our social structures – from forms of government to national borders – are often the result of utopias that were once considered unachievable dreams and that have yet become reality. Utopian thinking is one of the most remarkable human skills: the power to dream and imagine together and thus actively shape reality.

In the concluding event of our Hope, In Principle trilogy, we invite you to embark with us on the search for the island of Utopia. This voyage of discovery starts with an inspiring boat trip in the company of author and utopian Ilija Trojanow from Vienna, the Berlin-based activist Paulina Fröhlich who advocates for “radical politeness,” the Leipzig journalist and utopia researcher Greta Taubert, and the Berlin music collective “Selbstgebaute Musik” (Homemade Music).

Upon arriving at Spreepark, the participants will divide into groups. Guided by our guests, we will engage in various activities that will help us to dream, reflect, design, and make music.

The return trip on the boat offers an opportunity to gather and discuss the many and varied impressions and experiences of this unusual excursion. We look forward to exploring, together with you, the potential and power of utopian thinking.

The collective experiments with participatory performance concepts and with musical material in a variety of spaces. Collaboration, in whatever form, with laypeople plays a crucial role. Out of their experiences with numerous experiments in instrument building, the dialogue with artists, and workshops with children, youth, and adults, there have emerged a variety of musical performance projects dealing above all with education and urban development. For many years, the collective has operated the project space ANTJE ØKLESUND, where many of their ideas were born.
