Our oceans are by far the world’s biggest ecosystem. They cover more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface. For a long time it seemed as though the oceans could be an inexhaustible source of food for humans. In the meantime, it has become clear that highly industrialized fisheries, the destruction of marine habitats, pollution and climate change have driven many marine fish populations to the brink of extinction. In his lecture “Empty Oceans or Wild Life? Oceans in the 21st Century,” marine biologist Boris Worm talks about the risks of overfishing and shows how we could rebuild and make good use of marine ecosystems.
