<Frequencies> is an event series initiated by the artist duo tanzApartment c/o huber&christen, which focuses on the dialogue between the arts. The newly opened Galerie unter Berlin – Gallery Below Berlin will host a regular event (every 2 to 3 months), bringing together artists from various fields and genre, with each <frequency> session including at least two different art forms from the fields of dance, performance, music/sound art, visual arts, video art, readings, light design, and fashion. <Frequency 10|10> “tanzen&tönen,” will premiere on October 29, 2010, at 8:30 p.m., combining dance, singing, and architecture.

Since 2003, Vanessa Huber-Christen and Lorenz Huber have successfully developed and produced dance performances, films, and installations, sharing an interest in interdisciplinary choreography. In several prize-winning productions, they have demonstrated that they are able to work with the expressive possibilities of an architectural space and to think across genres. The exceptional commitment of the two young choreographers to creating an interdisciplinary event series for a very special place has persuaded the Schering Stiftung to support their experiment.

The Galerie unter Berlin occupies a space of more than 500 square meters in a listed basement vault of the former Königstadt Brewery in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg on the border to Berlin-Mitte. Still in its original state, dating back to 1885, the gallery impresses with its crude charme and architectural structure. Harnessing these characteristics, <Frequency 10|10> experiments with the special acoustics of the vault, with interferences and new sounds. Here, contrasting melodies of different epochs meet, pitches complement each other, and dissonances are encouraged. In addition to the sound structures, the dance scenes are thematically inspired by the history of the space, remembering as it does its varied use as a brewery, an air-raid shelter, an arms production site, a mushroom growing factory, and, finally, a property owned by the GDR’s Ministry for State Security.

The scenic dance and singing material will be installed in the Galerie unter Berlin with a particular view to its spatial structure and spread across several rooms in order to separate, for example, the visible and the audible. A play of light and shadow creates magical windows for bodies and space. Light, acoustics, and movement guide viewers while they make their own way through the performance.
