Auction and sale exhibition

for the sale of the art collection of the Schering Stiftung

Date:

December 02, 2022

Venue:

Grisebach
Fasanenstraße 25
10719 Berlin

Eleven works from the Schering Stiftung Art Collection will be auctioned by the Berlin-based auction house Grisebach on December 2. Among the artworks that will go on sale that evening are works by Christo, Stephan Balkenhol, and K. H. Hödicke. This will be followed in February 2023 by a sales exhibition of the remaining nearly 60 works in the collection, consisting of paintings, graphic works, and sculptures from West Berlin’s art scene since the 1960s by artists such as Peter Sorge, Hans Laabs, and G. L. Gabriel.

The art collection was completed in 2006, when Schering AG discontinued its business operations. Instead of continuing to develop the collection, the Schering Stiftung in 2008 decided instead to collect drawings and prints by contemporary artists and make them available to the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) in Berlin on permanent loan.

The decision to sell the art collection has been taken based on the fact that the Schering Stiftung sees itself as an institution promoting pioneering work in science or art, daring to break new ground, and supporting interdisciplinary scientists and artists on parts of their creative journey. In order to strengthen these activities and expand the Foundation’s commitment in these areas, the proceeds from the sale of the collection will go into the foundation’s endowment and benefit new projects.
