The Schering Stiftung Collection holds six drawings by Bernhard Leitner. Created in the 1970s, they depict the arrangements of sound sources in a spatial setting designed by the artist.
The sound installation Ton-Feld (Sound Field) was produced in 1979 for the Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld. Leitner recorded the set-up in detailed drawings. A person is placed in a reclining position on a so-called sound chair in the center of the exhibition space and surrounded by a sound field. Cello sounds in different combinations are variously projected from a total of four speaker pairs. Using elliptical shapes, the drawing renders visible the carefully constructed sound space that changes over time and illustrates how the listening person will connect to the sound sources.
Leitner’s works are created with a focus on the recipient’s body and perception. They are examples of sculptural sound art where the entire body is listening. In addition, the space itself is subject to a precise sound choreography.
