The Schering Stiftung Collection holds several drawings and prints by Linda Karshan that exemplify the U.S. American artist’s interest in rhythm and line.
Karshan’s artwork can be described as a dialogue and rhythmic dance with paper. She begins with intuitive first markings, followed by precise strokes she puts on paper to the rhythm of 2, 4, 8 or 16 beats. After each completed sequence, the artist rotates the sheet 90 or 180 degrees to continue the rhythmic flow. She always draws freehand, standing, and toward her own body so that her body measurements inscribe themselves into the drawings.
Until the 1980s, her work was significantly influenced by automatic drawing, which first shaped Surrealist art and later the U.S. American movement of Abstract Expressionism. Since the 1990s, the regularity of Karshan’s work process results in line and grid structures and thus in works that focus entirely on the essence of the line.
