Published in 2009, for grades 5 and 6, in cooperation with the Institute of Chemistry Education at the University of Duisburg-Essen
Markus Emden has developed three modules to deal with the topic of “water“: “A Profile of Water,” “Water as a Habitat,” and “Water as Raw Material.“ The starting-point is the occurrence of water on earth and its importance for the human body. Additional topics are the production of clean water, the climate change and its consequences, the use of water for energy production, and living both in and with water.
The teaching materials aim to promote the experimental skills of students and to practice team work and presentations. The topic of water is particularly well-suited to this purpose, since it provides opportunities for a variety of experiments that can be performed by the students themselves, e.g. experiments on cleaning water (distillation) or on how to detect ingredients and certain characteristics.
