Given a steadily growing world population and increasingly limited resources, it is necessary to adopt new ways of economic production to feed the global population. The cultivation of genetically modified crops, which has been well established for some 25 years, and their use as food or animal feedstuff are subject to controversial discussions in politics and society. In this context, it is becoming apparent that the public perceptions of safety and risks are not at all based on current scientific knowledge. To show how the biological safety research navigates between current scientific insights, legal regulations, and social controversy, the Integrative Research Institute for the Life Sciences (IRI) at Humboldt University of Berlin, presents a lecture by Prof. Dr. Joachim Schiemann from the Julius Kuehn Institute.
The lecture by Professor Schiemann, entitled “Risk Assessment and Regulation of New Plant Breeding Techniques,” is the second lecture in an event series called “Interdisciplinary Dialogue” at the IRI. Supported by the Schering Stiftung, the series provides young scientists from a variety of disciplines and institutions with an opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary conversation in order to explore commonalities and differences and develop collaborative and innovative research approaches. In public lectures, internationally renowned visiting scientists introduce the dialogue on the given topic.
The lecture by Prof. Schiemann will be followed by a workshop with the speaker. Natural scientists, psychologists and sociologists are invited to participate in a debate on genetically modified foods. The aim is to gain a better and deeper understanding of the research in the various disciplines and identify areas of cooperation. If you are interested in participating in the workshop, please contact Dr. Micha Schröter (micha.schroeter@iri-lifesciences.de).
The Schering Stiftung supports the interdisciplinary event series, since it promotes the dialogue between science and society and aims to connect young scientists with each other. By developing cooperative and innovative research approaches, the events seek to produce concrete results and collaborations.
