As the first part of a two-part production by the soloists’ ensemble Kaleidoskop, “Fluctuation 09,” the staged concert “Foreign Places” is having its première at Radialsystem. Based on the idea of the “sphericity of time” proposed by composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann, the soloists’ ensemble juxtaposes different musical eras and artistic genres. In the first part, “Foreign Places,” Kaleidoskop meets architect Anna Kubelik who translates the musical concept into space.

The starting point for the joint production is the works and biographies of Claude Vivier, Joseph Haydn, Iannis Xenakis and New York-based Irish composer Jennifer Walshe. With all four composers, foreignness has influenced their musical creativity in different ways. “Foreign Places” is an examination of the lives of these very different artists and their works.

Inspired by Italo Calvino’s poem “Invisible Cities,” the architect Anna Kubelik uses origami art to transform the concert space into a “foreign place,” where both the audience and the musicians meet in an unfamiliar space and reality and have to find their bearings.

“Foreign Places” is a musical and spatial journey through time, bringing together art, architecture, performance and music from different eras.
