MAKROSKOP is an interactive image/sound installation on the multi-faceted and contradictory life and work of the Russian scientist Sergei S. Tchachotin (1883–1973). The microbiologist and social visionary Tchachotin, a friend of Einstein’s and Pavlov’s, was a pioneer of genetic and cancer research. His life was deeply affected by the contemporary events of the 20th century.

MAKROSKOP, a spiral-shaped installation, fills the space of the Kaisersaal in the Museum of Photography. Projected onto the surface are image/sound sequences, which are continually flowing into the center of the spiral. The sensor system custom-developed for the installation enables the viewer to interactively determine the combination and speed of the image sequences. The “individualized” visual dynamics are enhanced by a perfectly tuned sound design.
An exhibition of photographs from the private archives of Sergei S. Tchachotin complements the biographical review of the scientist’s life.
The Ernst Schering Foundation supports this project because it intersects science, art and society in a special way.

Location: Kaisersaal in the Museum of Photography—Berlin State Museums, Jebensstr. 2, 10623 Berlin
