For five years, the Schering Stiftung has been collecting contemporary drawings and prints in cooperation with the Museum of Prints and Drawings of the Berlin State Museums. The exhibition “System and Sensuality. The Schering Stiftung Collection – Contemporary Art from Tom Chamberlain to Jorinde Voigtfor the first time will present all the drawings acquisitions made since 2008. The exhibition will show ninety, mostly non-figurative and (in the broadest sense) minimalist works, most of which date from the past decade.

The works of the artists represented in the Schering Stiftung Collection (Tom Chamberlain, William Engelen, Nadine Fecht, Claude Heath, Channa Horwitz, Linda Karshan, Bernhard Leitner, Carsten Nicolai, Ignacio Uriarte, and Jorinde Voigt) in various ways illustrate the systematic-conceptual use of line drawings, which possess their very own sensuality and vitality. This applies to numerous works that are based on, for instance, grid- or cell-like condensed lines, which may partially open up to seemingly random or chaotic forms. In addition, drawings combine with other means of artistic expression such as music, sculpture, dance and performance. Diagram and score as varieties of systemic drawings here play as important a role as the materiality of the drawing implements.
Selected works by Frank Badur, Max Cole, Corinne Laroche, Jenny Michel, Karin Sander, Owen Schuh, Malte Spohr, and German Stegmaier from the contemporary drawings collection of the Museum of Prints and Drawings will join this wide range of artistic approaches and enter into a dialogue with the works of the Schering Stiftung Collection.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a rich program of lectures, artist talks, and concerts, as well as a catalogue that reflects on, documents, and depicts the works in the Schering Stiftung Collection.

Press
