Aljoscha’s artistic practice includes sculpture, installation, painting, and drawing. His works in the art collection of the Schering Stiftung at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin show a dimension of biomorphic structure that can also be found in works by Tomás Saraceno and Nora Schattauer, which are likewise part of the aforementioned Collection.

The Ukrainian artist’s untitled small-format drawings from 2015 – twenty-two in total – consist entirely of delicately applied pencil dots. Despite forgoing color, the artist succeeds in creating delicate shapes in varying shades of grey. The darkening effect is achieved through the density and layering of dots. Reminiscent of plant shapes, the motifs harmonize with the artist’s choice of paper: lokta paper made from the Daphne shrub native to the Himalayan region. Due to the inclusion of darker fibers, the image carrier has a unique surface structure and thus helps animate the image motif.

Aljoscha sees his art as “bioism” or as an expression of novel cellular life forms. He thinks of his artistic-conceptual, organic designs as creations inspired by the methods of synthetic biology, a rather young branch of the life sciences. Synthetic biology applies engineering principles to redesign or construct new biological cells and simple organisms in the lab.
