The Berlin-based German artist Ralf Ziervogel became known in the early 2000s for his meticulously crafted figurative scenes and a motif world inhabited by both animals and (often naked) human creatures. Until 2011, he created representational depictions that exaggerate the reality of the outside world. The two-part drawing Every Adidas Got Its Story (2010) shows animal and human protagonists sporting branded clothing and cellphones and mistreating and injuring each other. The comic-like figures are floating in the white pictorial space. Limbs, heads, and blood are careening through the air alongside syringes, arrows, and cigarettes, presenting a chaotic and cruel image.

Two years later, Ziervogel embarked on a different path and created the multi-part, abstract series Eskimolied (Eskimo Song, 2013), which must be understood as a dialogue between the artist’s body and the paper as carrier material. Prior to the image production, the artist applied gouache to body parts, primarily his thumbs, and pressed them onto the paper. What we see are traces, marks, streaks, and smears, which can be easily identified as the kinds of movement sequences that result from handling screen devices such as smartphones. Next to these traces, we can read words in tiny letters such as “ON,” “OFF,” “SLIDE UP/DOWN,” “ERROR,” or “FUCK.”

The drawings visualize our handling of digital devices and their permanent presence in our everyday lives. Such traces normally remain invisible. By drawing out their aesthetic potential, Ziervogel fosters an awareness of these contemporary gestures. The title of the work, Eskimo Song, refers to the improvised songs the Inuit hunters sing in ice and snow to stay focused and navigate the world they live in.
