Loving and being loved seem to be among the most fundamental phenomena of being human. The brains of people in love are powered by “chemical fireworks.” But who or what determines why and how deeply we fall in love? Do genes play a key role? Or does the potential partner merely have to smell good and know how to dance? Has it always been like that? How did and do people love in other times or cultures? How do they love today? Where do people today find love? In a café? Online? Or maybe at the opera, where great love stories are nightly negotiated.
These questions will be discussed by Prof. Dr. Karl Grammer and Prof. Dr. Ute Frevert as part of a salon entitled “What About Love?,” which will be held at the Komische Oper Berlin on November 14, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. With this salon, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Schering Stiftung continue their successful cooperation of the last two seasons.
Prof. Dr. Karl Grammer is a Vienna-based behavioral scientist and evolutionary biologist. He has studied the laws governing individual partner choice and knows biology’s tricks for reproducing the proper genes. Prof. Dr. Ute Frevert is a historian and director of the Center for the History of Emotions at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. In her research, she looks at society as a whole and studies the cultural trends of emotions. Her approach has pioneered a whole new research field.
The discussion between the two researchers will be accompanied by music pieces on the topic of love presented by singers and musicians of the Komische Oper.
