How do self-learning systems and AI generators change our democratic culture, school learning, and the workplace? The lecture performance “LOVE WORK MACHINE” offers young adults a creative look behind the scenes of automated systems.

The centerpiece is an AI-moderated game developed in cooperation with the Arbeiterkammer Salzburg (AK) and ARGEkultur and tested with 720 school students and trainees in 2024. In this game, participants configurate their digital avatars and playfully learn the basics of programming and prompting. In groups, they explore the societal impact of automated systems and reflect critically on the new technologies.

Straddling performance, gaming, and education, the project combines artistic strategies with education and training. While digital media have democratized communication and creativity, AI is rapidly changing job profiles and learning processes. Where previously it took years of education and training, today often all it takes is a single prompt.

The aim is to strengthen the participants’ self-efficacy as critical users and to foster a conscious and aware approach to data and AI tools whose operators have a growing influence on society and democracy. The lecture performance is suited for a variety of subjects – German, ethics, computer science, political science, art, theater – and provides ideas and inspiration for further teaching.

Georg Werner studied Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice at the University of Hildesheim, Experimental Media Design at UdK Berlin, and Sound Art at HBK Braunschweig as master-class student of Ulrich Eller. In addition, he is a master craftsman for event technology. He works internationally – both independently and in cooperation with artists and collectives – at the interface of art and technology. His focus is on the development of systems that work both artistically and technologically. By modifying objects and spaces, he creates experiences designed to sharpen one’s perceptual skills.

He shares his expertise through workshops and classes at, among other places, the University of Hildesheim, UdK Berlin, HBK Braunschweig, FH Dortmund, and the Berlin School of Sound
