What does aging actually mean? This and other questions around the issue of aging and intergenerational equity are addressed by 13 scholarship students of the interdisciplinary Themenklasse (subject-focused course) on “Aging and Age” at Berlin’s Humboldt University. They have gained insights into the potential of old age, decision-making bodies that are committed to intergenerational equity, and the consequences of intervening into the aging process.
About a year ago, the “Aging and Age” course was launched as part of the Germany Scholarships awarded by Berlin’s Humboldt University, in line with the focus of the 2013 Science Year on “The Demographic Opportunity.” Over the past year, thirteen students from such varied disciplines as biophysics, psychology, sports science, the social sciences, cultural studies, and the humanities have talked with different experts and gained many insights.
Consisting of four presentations, the symposium discusses research issues around the issues of age/aging and intergenerational equity that have emerged during the course of the Themenklasse. The contributions are scientific and interdisciplinary, but also experimental. Students have, for example, collaborated with a senior citizens drama group, produced a film, written an open letter, and investigated a breach of taboo. The students look forward to interested visitors of all ages who will participate in the discussions.
As part of its focus to promote young talents, the Schering Stiftung has participated in the Germany Scholarship program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research since the 2012 summer term. We are particularly interested in getting the students interested in the arts and the natural sciences beyond their own discipline. The pilot scheme of the Themenklasse provides young scholars and scientists at an early stage with insights into current research projects and gives them the opportunity to develop and present their own ideas.
