Within the last few years, Berlin has witnessed the growth of an especially rich young music theater scene outside of the established opera houses. The festival “BAM!”, organized by the association Contemporary Music Theater Berlin (ZMB), pools the activities of this multi-faceted new music theater scene and makes its variety visible and audible to a wider public on September 20–23, 2018.
The festival “BAM!” is a platform that for the first time presents a major selection of Berlin-based freelance music theater creatives and their different aesthetics and approaches. The audience can look forward to a marathon of 14 world premieres, more than 30 performances, and two panel discussions. What all of the festival’s productions have in common is their effort to overcome the abstract formal language of the classical avant-garde while trying to find methods for new and self-reflective ways of narration.
The numerous venues for the festival have been selected because of their geographical proximity: not only can they be easily reached; they also form a space of encounter for the audience. At 13 locations between Oranienburger Strasse and Invalidenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte, all within walking distance from each other, the festival visitors can experience different productions and cross paths again and again.
