with Dr. Martin Glos (Charité – University Medicine Berlin) and Thea Herold (Managing Director, German Sleep Foundation)

Lecture by Dr. Martin Glos

In his lecture, sleep researcher Dr. Martin Glos will offer insights into the structure and function of the sleep–wake cycle, including individual differences, changes across the lifespan, and gender-specific variations. He will also discuss methods of assessing sleep, ranging from sleep diaries and smartwatch data to EEG recordings conducted in a sleep laboratory. In addition, he will address the limitations and potential risks of self-tracking through apps and wearable devices, and highlight current research projects and interdisciplinary collaborations at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Schlafakademie Berlin.

Workshop by Thea Herold

Thea Herold’s workshop focuses on intentional breaks. It explores the value and benefits of sleep and the importance of taking breaks, using the power nap as an example. The workshop examines how the 24/7 lifestyle and modern work structures affect our circadian rhythms. In practical terms, Tai Chi exercises help participants relax and take a short nap.

Thea Herold works in Berlin as a lecturer, author, and coach. In 2011, she co-founded the expert network Schlafakademie Berlin and continues to work with the team to this day. As part of a working fellowship in Cork, Ireland, she launched her long-term project “breakreminder” as a writer-in-residence. She has published books, including the non-fiction title “Der Schlafquotient” (Ingo Fietze/Thea Herold), published by Hoffmann und Campe in Hamburg. Her book “Du hast Zeit – Eine Liebeserklärung an die Pause” was published in 2018. She is now certified in CBTI (for insomnia), has completed the Curriculum BUB, and is a member of the German Sleep Society (DGSM).

Dr. Martin Glos is a research fellow and project manager at the Interdisciplinary Center for Sleep Medicine at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is a medical physicist and a certified sleep researcher with the German Sleep Society (DGSM), and he earned his Ph.D. in medical sciences at Charité with a dissertation on new methods for measuring cardiovascular function in patients with sleep disorders.

His research focuses on new diagnostic approaches to sleep measurement, particularly using “smart” sensors in the home environment, as well as on assessing daytime performance and well-being. Furthermore, his interest lies in the investigation and evaluation of environmental factors affecting the sleep-wake cycle, such as various noise sources, the effects of light, temperature influences, as well as time zone changes (“jet lag”) and (night) shift work.

In addition, he is involved in education and continuing professional development and, as a board member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Sleep Medicine Association, advocates for regional networking and public outreach on sleep medicine topics. At the Schlafakademie Berlin, he is actively involved in programs for workplace and institutional health management and supports, at various levels—such as in school projects—the promotion and further societal integration of the topic of “sufficient and restful sleep” as a key component of health and well-being.
