Hanna Schygulla reads texts and poems from the ten new EU member countries, which were selected by these countries’ Berlin-based cultural diplomats under the curatorship of Dr. Markus Fein. The musical program consists of music by Leos Janacek, interpreted by the Prazak Quartet and the pianist Lauma Skride.
From a cultural perspective, too, the accession of ten new member countries from Central and Eastern Europe is a big and important milestone in the development of the European Union. The cultural exchange with these countries will intensify, thus spreading their culture to Western Europe to a hitherto unprecedented degree.
By supporting the musical-literary matinée, the Schering Stiftung hopes to arouse interest and curiosity in the culture of our new EU neighbours. With the expansion of the European Union, the Foundation will become more involved in projects of our Central and Eastern European neighbors in order to acquaint a broader audience with the culture from these countries. Faithful to our guiding principle, we thus want to cross boundaries, support excellence and take risks.
