The work “Commuters”, 2017, by N. Dash (*1980 in Miami, FL) is the latest addition to the Schering Stiftung’s collection, which is on permanent loan to the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin.

The “Commuters” are part of an ongoing series in which the artist touches, folds and refolds a piece of paper on her daily commute from home to her studio in New York City. This way she is recording transient moments and distance into the material. After wearing down the structure of the paper over a period of time, the paper is then “sealed” by the artist, in this case with graphite. The paint thus retains the last processing step and stabilises the sensitive sheet of paper, thus creating a sculptural wall relief. A fissured surface is created, which reveals its traces through the previous treatments. The work is at the same time a contemporary document that has accompanied the artist for a while and captures and reflects feelings or moods.
