Law and justice are rarely identical; sometimes they are miles apart. What is rightful in a legal sense is not always seen to be just from a moral point of view. Do we have to live with this contradiction?

Or are there possibilities to combine law and justice? Can there even be such a thing as man-made justice? How unjust is our jurisprudence?

Adelheid Kastner (born 1962) is an Austrian psychiatrist. The trained psychiatrist and neurologist is director of the Psychiatric Clinic with a focus on Forensic Psychiatry at the Kepler University Hospital in Linz. A renowned expert in the field of forensic psychiatry, she was, among other things, a court-appointed expert in the Fritzl case. In November 2015, Adelheid Kastner was awarded the Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. Currently, she is working to establish a forensic youth psychiatry uni. Her writings include Schuldhaft. Täter und ihre Innenwelten (2012), Wut. Plädoyer für ein verpöntes Gefühl (2014), Tatort Trennung. Ein Psychogramm (2016).

Thomas Fischer was born in 1953 in Sauerland. After discontinuing his German studies, he studied law in Würzburg from 1980 to 1984, where he received his doctorate in 1986. After holding positions as a judge and presiding judge at the Leipzig Regional Court and as a ministerial councilor and head of department at the Saxony Ministry of Justice, he was a judge at the Federal Court of Justice from 2000 until his retirement in 2017 (presiding judge since 2013). Since then, he has worked as a publicist and as a lawyer (criminal defense attorney) in Munich.
