Is there such a thing as absolute truth? Or is the definition of what is true and false ultimately always in the eye of the beholder and contingent on historical and social circumstances, values, and standards?

In light of the presidency of Donald Trump and his constant challenges to seemingly universal truths, the call for inalienable, irrefutable truths has become louder. But isn’t this perhaps, in fact, an illusion? In the final analysis, is any kind of truth always relative?

Dr. Lara Keuck

Research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin

Dr. Lara Keuck conducts research on the history and philosophy of medicine. Her work examines how knowledge about disease has changed over the course of the 20th century and how boundaries between health and disease have shifted. Since 2021, she has led an independent Max Planck Research Group on practices of validation in biomedical research at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. Lara Keuck graduated in molecular biomedicine from the University of Bonn in 2008 with a thesis in virology at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin. She received her PhD in 2012 in the history, theory and ethics of medicine with a paper on the functioning of medical classification systems. From 2012 to 2015, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Institute of Philosophy at Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2020, Lara Keuck was elected to The Young Academy by the Leopoldina and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
