Burning plastic, grandma’s apple pie, or the smell of someone we love: no other sense causes as immediate a response as smell. The perceptions of smell and taste are closely tied to our emotions, which is why they play a special role in our social life. How do smelling and tasting affect social identity and distinction? How do they affect social integration and cohesion?
We will discuss these and further questions with the following speakers:
Prof. Dr. Dr. Hanns Hatt, professor of cell physiology at Ruhr University in Bochum and president of the Akademienunion (Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities)
Prof. Dr. Thomas O. Höllmann, professor of Chinese studies and ethnology and president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities
PD Dr. Anne-Rose Meyer, professor of literature at the University of Wuppertal
Geza Schön, perfumer
