Being hugged by a loved one, feeling the coolness of a fancy silk scarf on the skin or the rough bark of an old tree – touching makes us experience and understand our environment in a very particular way. Why is touch so important for human beings? What role does it play for our social lives? And how do touch and emotions impact each other?
These and other questions will be discussed at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities on February 19 by Gabriele Brandstetter, professor of theater studies at Freie Universität Berlin; Reiner Delgado, head of social division of the German Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted; and Martin Grunwald, head of the Haptic Research Laboratory at the University of Leipzig. The discussion will be moderated by science journalist Volkart Wildermuth.
The discussion will be followed by a theremin concert by the German-Sorbian musician Carolina Eyck, one of the world’s best theremin performers.
