On October 23-26, 2011, the Campus Charité Mitte of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin hosted the third World Health Summit. Under the auspices of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 1200 leading international experts from medicine, science, government, business, and civil society gathered under the guiding theme „Today’s Science – Tomorrow’s Agenda“. The Schering Stiftung supported the World Health Summit 2011 again as an important international forum for discussing the 21st century’s global challenges in the fields of health and research.
This year, the World Health Summit under the direction of Prof. Dr. Karl Max Einhäupl (Chief Executive Officer, Charité), Prof. Dr. Detlev Ganten (Summit President, Charité Foundation) and Prof. Dr. Steve Wesselingh (Summit President, Monash University) invited experts to Berlin to discuss problems of global relevance such as the effects of climate change on health, the dramatic increase of chronic diseases in an aging world population, and the international coordination and strategic planning of the battle against infectious diseases and their changing patterns of global spreading.
In a number of working sessions, the participants of the World Health Summit developped results and recommendations which were made available to decision-makers in government, business, research, and health care systems. The Schering Stiftung supported the session „HIV/AIDS: New Technologies and Their Place in Prevention“ on October 25, which, under the direction of Prof. Peter Piot (Direktor, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, England) and Prof. Michel Sidibé (Executive Director, UNAIDS, Schweiz), tried and offered an outlook on the future of the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
