Orkan Telhan is an interdisciplinary researcher whose practice resides at the intersection of art, design, science and emerging technologies. Telhan’s biennial contribution was a continuation of his recent works Microbial Fruits of Istanbul (2021) and Where Do Gardens Come From? (2022), which reflects on the complex histories of Istanbul’s community gardens (bostans) from the perspective of biodiversity.
Questioning the colonial function of museums and the anthropocentric bias that lies behind them, Telhan’s work titled Yenikapı’s Museums comprised two alternative museums for Yenikapı/Langa, one of the most contentious urban sites in Istanbul where a material history of thousands of years is hidden beneath layers of asphalt and gravel: The Museum of Digestion was a public garden installation at Müze Gazhane where different aspects of Langa are spatialised, re-contextualised and ‘digested’ within the visitor’s body. The Museum of Exhalation, on the other hand, was a printed publication presented at the Reading Rooms of the biennial, featuring various residents of Langa – plants, ants, bones, stones – interviewing human researchers. Telhan invited a selection of artists and scientists to produce a new text for the book, which was printed in Turkish and distributed freely in the exhibition venues. The English version was published online, and it can be downloaded here.
