Max – Artists in Residence at Brandenburg Schools (2024)

Bringing guest artists to schools

Max – Artists in Residence at Brandenburg Schools (2024)

Bringing guest artists to schools

Date:

January 01 – December 31, 2024

In 2023, the Schering Stiftung funded the artist residencies of Sybille Zeh, Annett Glöckner and Catrin Große at schools in Brandenburg as part of its program “Max – Artists in Residence at Brandenburg Schools.” These residencies were extended for 2024. The program has grown in recent years: Since 2023 and 2024, schools in Sonnewalde and Pritzwalk have joined the program. With Pritzwalk, Max has now arrived in Prignitz, the least populated district in the Federal Republic of Germany. Katja Martin’s artist residency is being funded here for 2024.

The Foundation has supported the program “Max – Artists in Residence at Brandeburg Schools” in Berlin and Brandenburg since 2019. Max stipulates that artists move into a studio at schools in Berlin or Brandenburg for at least one school year. In addition to their own artistic work, they work with the students and explore a variety of topics artistically. To do so, they open their studio one day a week. Max’s distinguishing feature is the encounters and artistic working processes among artists, students, and teaching staff.

“Max – Artists in Residence at Brandenburg Schools” is a program of the Plattform Kulturelle Bildung Brandenburg initiated by the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor and funded by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Culture of the State of Brandenburg and the Schering Stiftung.

The Plattform Kulturelle Bildung Brandenburg is a department of the Brandenburgische Gesellschaft für Kultur und Geschichte gGmbH, which is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Culture of the State of Brandenburg and the State Capital of Potsdam.

Katja Martin studied fine art/sculpture at Burg Giebichenstein Halle and the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee, as well as postgraduate studies in art therapy at Goldsmiths College London. In 2006, she founded the artists' cooperative Atelier im Grünen and in 2018 the artists' cooperative mobiler Kunstraum for art education in rural areas. Since 2022 she has been on the board of the bbk Brandenburg in order to actively deal with the special feature: art in the rural state of Brandenburg. In addition to various solo and group exhibitions, she has developed participatory art projects especially for rural, public spaces and festivals.

"I work as a MAX artist because... reality often needs wings, the growth of which is promoted by art. My aim is to lead people to their artistic expression (not to technical perfection)."

Catrin Große has worked as a freelance artist since 1995. She studied at the Dresden University of Fine Arts and the Royal College of Art in London. In 2002–2004, she developed, as part of the ARTuS! project, programs to expand the teaching of art and to integrate artistic-aesthetic processes into the cross-disciplinary learning process and offered further education classes for art educators. Since 1995, she has given many workshops and lectures, including at the Coventry School of Art and Design, Yale College of Wrexham, and the University of Wales. In 2019 she gave graphic art classes for teachers and glassmaking experts at the Bild-Werk Frauenau in Bavaria, and in 2023 she held a print workshop and a talk for experienced and emerging print artists at the Swansea Print Workshop in Wales.

"For me, Max is…a wonderful opportunity to develop projects together with students and teachers. This also stimulates my own artistic work, bringing in new aspects, perspectives, and materials."

Sibylle Zeh lives and works in Berlin. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna und the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her work comprises paintings, drawings, collages, and installations, as well as photo series and textile objects. In 2000 she became known through her feminist book project "Women in Art History." She painted over all entries on male artists in art encyclopedias in white to draw attention to the low number or complete absence of major female artists. Besides her work as an artist, she has also worked in museum education and different areas of cultural education.

"During the Max residence, I am motivated by … the imagination and the great ideas that find expression when the students open up and artistically bring their inner worlds out into the open."

Annett Glöckner is a qualified designer and master class student from the Berlin University of the Arts. She was also trained in lead typesetting and filmsetting. Her artistic work focuses on poetry, performance, text drawings and text objects, art in public space, and art education. With students from all schools in Wittstock, she designed, for example, the tiled wall "Wir feiern die Natur“ (We celebrate nature) to commemorate the regional garden show. Together with 80 students of all age groups from the Protestant School in Neuruppin, she drove around the disctrict, and together they created artworks for the book and the exhibition "Alt wie ein Baum" (Old like a tree) on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Sparkasse Ostprignitz-Ruppin. She lives and works in Neuruppin.

"I work as a Max artist because… the abandon and immediacy of the children very much inspire me. I myself am very much like that, and that generates great synergies. Plus, together with the children, I can act out my love of nature, of rhymes, songs, and simply being silly."
