Computers, cheese packaging, toothbrushes – it is hard to imagine everyday life without plastic. In Germany, some 130 kg of plastic per person end up in the garbage every year. Worldwide, only some 9 percent of plastic waste is recycled – most of it ends up in landfills or in nature: on remote beaches, in garbage patches in the middle of the oceans, or as microplastic in the Antarctic.
