Computers, cheese packaging, toothbrushes – it is hard to imagine everyday life without plastic. In Germany, some 130 kg of plastic per person end up in the garbage every year. Worldwide, only some 9 percent of plastic waste is recycled – most of it ends up in landfills or in nature: on remote beaches, in garbage patches in the middle of the oceans, or as microplastic in the Antarctic. Today, plastic is everywhere, posing a risk to animals and the ecosystem. This topic will be addressed on the online platform The Debate at www.die-debatte.org, from July 1, 2018. Join the discussion!

Scientists have for some time acknowledged plastic waste as a serious and global problem. Politicians, too, are debating approaches, solutions, and bans. But will bans actually help reduce plastic waste? Is it possible to remove the existing plastic waste from the oceans and our environment? How useful and effective are the concepts that have been developed for this purpose? And what alternatives do we have in order to avoid plastic?
