09.02.2015, Berlin | C/O Berlin has initiated a series of creativity workshops for children who have grown up in children’s homes or who live separately from their parents because of a disastrous family situation. With support from the Schering Stiftung, C/O Berlin organizes six workshops that are realized in cooperation with the children’s homes of the AWO (Workers’ Welfare Association) Strausberg, the Johannesstift Spandau and, among others, the refugee shelter in Neu-Westend’s Soorstraße. The workshops aim to provide children and youth from socially disadvantaged backgrounds with an opportunity to get to know film and photography techniques, train their visual skills, and express their ideas creatively under the guidance of professionals.
For many years, C/O Berlin has been known not only for its outstanding exhibitions of international photographers and artists, but also for its nurturing of young talents and its dedicated, professional work in the field of cultural education. In this field, the Schering Stiftung seeks above all to support children and youth from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. In the C/O Berlin workshops specifically developed for this target group, the children not only learn how to handle a camera and how to closely observe their environment, they also discover their own creative skills. Moreover, the final presentation of the photos and videos that have been created in the workshops, to be held in the fall of 2015, is designed to boost the young people’s self-confidence.
The first workshop took place in Münchehofe in the fall of 2014, on the topic of “Das Fremde” (The Foreign). Besides the many photographs that came out of the workshop, the children also had the opportunity to participate in a theater workshop in cooperation with the Theaterwerkstatt of the AWO Strausberg. More workshops and a theater production are scheduled for 2015.
The date of the final presentation will be announced soon.
