Schering Stiftung Art Award 2007

The Schering Stiftung Art Award 2007 goes to Nairy Baghramian. In Nairy Baghramian’s sculptures, glass, metal and textile elements play a key role. Her work refers to the repertoire of modernist forms in architecture and design and fascinates by its perfect use of materials and proportions.

The jury gave the award to the Berlin-based artist, because her work is not only of high quality, but also shows an original, independent position. “Baghramian draws on the potential of architectural sculpture and has a high degree of sculptural and technical precision,” said the jury to explain its decision. “What seems at first glance slightly reduced and almost suppressed, quickly turns out to be very complex and derived from numerous dualities. Sculptural density is set against emptiness, stability against lability, opening against limiting, simple form against ‘broken’ spatial images, surface against depth, white against black. In sum, her spatial installations, which create a referential and relations system between the real architecture and her sculpture, between space and observer, can be called silent and sparse spaces for reflection.”

The biennial art award of the Schering Stiftung honors talented young artists who hold the promise of further outstanding achievements in the future. In 2007, the award was offered in the field of sculpture. In 2005, the Schering Stiftung Art Award was presented in the field of painting. Award recipient was Cornelia Renz. The nominees for the Schering Stiftung Art Award 2007 were Nairy Baghramian, Thorsten Brinkmann, Jan Bünnig, Michael Sailstorfer and Marco Schuler. Works by all five artists will be on display at the Berlinische Galerie in an exhibition curated by Ursula Prinz, from January 19 through April 9, 2007.

“The Schering Stiftung Art Award not only recognizes a young artist, but also emphasizes the importance of Berlin as a capital of culture,” said Klaus Wowereit, mayor of Berlin, in his welcome address at the award ceremony. “The Berlinische Galerie is exactly the right place to make young art accessible to a broader public.”

Born in 1972 in Bühl/Baden, lives and works in Munich. Centering on the relationship of the human body to its spatial environment, Marco Schuler's artwork deals with this subject matter both performatively and sculpturally. For his objects, Schuler uses simple materials such as cardboard, wooden four-by-fours, canvas and tar. His sculptures make us feel the tension between the search for transcendence and an immediate physical-spatial experience.

Born in 1979 in Velden/Vils, lives and works in Berlin. Found objects of everyday life and their transformation are at the center of the work of Michael Sailstorfer. The things that he puts to new use through partly subtle, partly strong interventions are vehicles of the imaginary and always also meant to be themselves. Many of his works are designed to be performative and thus add a temporal aspect to the spatial dimension.

For his sculptures and installations, Thorsten Brinkmann assembles everyday objects into new, unexpected constellations. The source material of his works is the things sorted out and thrown away in our industrialized consumer society. He is interested in the things themselves, in their formal qualities and in their history that can be read through traces of use.
